A message from Dr. Bencik:
I grew up in a suburb of Detroit with my three siblings and numerous pets. My parents are both teachers, so education was paramount in my house. I always knew I wanted to be a doctor from the time I could talk. I escaped Michigan for four years and went to the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia for my undergraduate degree. I loved Philly but returned to Michigan for medical school and residency. I met my husband, Jason, while doing my internship. He is from Oconomowoc and the reason I am now a resident of Wisconsin. Since the move to Milwaukee, I have had four wonderful (most of the time) kids and a crazy border collie. I diagnosed myself with celiac disease (gluten intolerance) a number of years ago, and my son also developed it. Learning to live with food restrictions and having a child with it has been challenging, but also helped me to appreciate the difficulty of living with food allergies. I love long summer walks, Zumba (Latin exercise dancing) and attending all my kids' sports activities (though my son did tell me to try not to be the loudest one at the soccer game). I enjoy spending time with my family the most.
Being a pediatrician is truly an amazing and rewarding experience. From the eager and anxious expecting parents, to the vulnerable newborn, to toddler joys including temper tantrums and potty training, and on to the teen years of maturity and socializing (yes, text messaging and Facebook), I get to help parents and children navigate through it all. In no other field is it as important to work as a team with the whole family and at the same time, share in the joys and frustrations of parenthood. I love when my patients tell me they dressed up like Dr. B for play, or when they see me at school and tell me they ate their vegetables that day. Pediatrics focuses on nutrition, development and behavior so much more than ear infections and viruses (although there are plenty of those). I would love to meet with you to talk about how I can help you in this wonderful adventure called parenthood. Come meet with me and see our great office.
