In spring 1997, Children's Hospital and Health System was approached by Milwaukee Public Schools with the idea of opening up a School Nurse Program in some of Milwaukee's central city schools. Five pediatric nurse practitioners served the students in 12 primary grade schools in the 53206 zip code. Today, there are 20 registered nurses covering 42 schools. There also is a site located in the Next Door Foundation, 2545 N. 29th St. The goal of the School Nurse Program is twofold: to attend to the community's health needs and to educate children and families about preventive care.

All of the registered nurses working at the School Nurse Program are trained in disease prevention. In addition to treating children's illnesses, they are teaching preventive strategies, such as vision and hearing screenings. Previously, many of these families ended up in the emergency room because of a lack of education, not knowing how to access treatment or what to do for minor illnesses.

Additionally, for chronic illnesses such as asthma, diabetes, seizures or sickle cell, the nurses are able to provide care and monitor the students' lifestyles to make suggestions on how they can better manage their illnesses. The nurses provide education on health care topics including anger management, drugs and alcohol, human growth and development, hygiene, nutrition and stress. In addition, the nurses coordinate care with physicians, clinics, social workers and insurance companies.

Through Children's Medical Group, a member of Children's Hospital and Health System, Next Door Pediatrics has established a practice nearby to serve the children. Next Door Pediatrics, 2545 N. 29th St., is the only pediatric clinic focusing their practice in a community where 17,000 children live.
