Sunscreen
The best way to protect children under the age of 6 months is to keep them out of direct sunlight. Loose cotton clothing, shaded areas and hats are important.
When using sunscreens, it is best to select one that is made for children. Choose a sunscreen with both UVB and UVA protection and a SPF of at least 15. There is no added protection from sunscreens with a SPF greater than 40. For babies over 6 months of age, test a small area before applying all over. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes prior to going outdoors and reapply frequently.
Treat a sunburn by replacing lost fluids. Apply cool compresses and avoid further sun exposure. Remember that the sun is strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. It can be reflected off surfaces such as sand, concrete and water, and can penetrate through clouds.
