Back to school

Everyone is excited for the start of a new school year. As pediatricians and parents ourselves, we know this is an exciting and challenging time of year for parents and children. We would like to offer some helpful hints and links to resources to make this school season a fun, joyful and terrific school year.

Kindergarten physicals

Wisconsin requires that children entering kindergarten have up-to-date immunizations.  See Wisconsin Immunization laws. Bayshore Pediatrics incorporates the immunizations with a physical exam. These appointment slots fill up quickly, so please call early to schedule your child's kindergarten physical. The schools provide forms for the physician's office to complete which should be returned to your child's school after the physical exam. Please bring this form with you to the visit.

Nutrition

Good nutrition is the foundation for learning, focus and energy throughout the school day. A healthy breakfast begins the day right! It is important to make sure your kids get a good breakfast before going to school. Snacks during the day provide an important source of energy. Offer a variety of nutritious snacks such as yogurt, raisins, cut up veggies and fruits. Throughout the day, ensure that they are getting foods from all four food groups with three servings of dairy per day. We recommend limiting fast food and juice to about four ounces per day.

Keeping organized

It always is a challenge to keep organized throughout the school year. A couple of brief suggestions for keeping organized and providing a stress free day are:

  • Ensure child gets adequate sleep, providing a consistent bed time. For example, children younger than 5 may go to bed between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m., and children 6 to 10 years of age may go to bed between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m.
  • Avoid last minute scramble by keeping book bags, completed homework assignments, items needed for the next day by the door and near the coats and shoes.
  • Have clothes laid out the night before to take away the pressure of choosing an outfit.
  • Decide on breakfast and lunch foods ahead of time, possibly packing your child's lunch the night before.
  • Create an environment that is encouraging to doing homework. A suggestion is to provide a consistent, permanent and quiet place to do homework.
  • Set aside ample time for homework.
  • Establish a household rules that the TV stays off during homework time.
  • Limit television and computer time, encourage physical activity.
