When your baby sleeps

When does the baby sleep? Simple. Whenever you wish he or she was awake so you could show off to visitors. When is the baby awake? When you want to sleep!

It may take a few weeks for your baby to get a sense of "day" and "night." Be patient. In a few months your baby will sleep through the night and accept regular nap times during the day.

A word about cribs. Be sure the slats on the crib are close enough together so that the baby cannot get his or her head caught in the spaces. Make sure there are no strings or loops of material that might wrap around your baby's neck. Your baby may try to climb out of the crib, so avoid endposts that might catch on clothing and leave him or her hanging in the air. Avoid objects in the bed. The mattress should be firm, flat and protected with a waterproof cover. A quilted cotton mattress pad, a baby sheet and needed blankets can be added as the weather dictates. No pillows should be used.

Your baby should be put to sleep on its side or back. Be sure your baby can freely kick and move his or her arms. Don't put your baby in bed with a bottle!
