Summer health checks
Now is the time to schedule your child's health check. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends an annual exam for children. Summer camps and school sports require a physical every two years.
A health check starts with a medical history to review any recent illnesses or injuries. It is important to discuss your child's school performance and behavior. We will review nutrition, diet and exercise. We also will discuss confidential information with your child related to drinking, smoking, drugs, sexual activity and depression.
Let us know about your child's extracurricular activities and sports. Bring information about any medications your child is taking and let us know of any upcoming travel. Also bring along camp and school participation forms or medication sheets. Write down your questions in advance so you won't forget them!
The medical exam is a head-to-toe exam. Your child will wear a gown or undress to undergarments. The nurse will check height, weight and blood pressure and may do a vision or hearing screen. We will determine if any laboratory or X-rays are needed. We will remind you if your child is due for vaccines.
An annual visit to the pediatrician can help ensure that your child is fit to participate in activities. It can help prevent illness and injury in the coming year. |
