Before the Wheel: Teen driving information

Take the No Phone Zone pledge today

YOU can be the best example to a teen driver to never talk or text while driving.  You may not have a young driver in your household but most likely have a niece, nephew, student, or grandchild who is a teen driver. Example is the best way for you to influence a new driver.

Today is the day, go to www.beforethewheel.com/links.html and go to Online Resources on the left side of the page. Make the pledge on the link, Oprah's No Phone Zone.

The Before The Wheel program provides a new method of communicating safe driving concepts to teenage drivers by promoting a tactical step-by-step approach for parents to guide their teen to develop a strong technical skill set and make better decisions before the teen gets behind the wheel.

Before The Wheel is sponsored by West Bend. For more information on working with a teen driver, visit www.beforethewheel.com.

Driving resources and tips

Before The Wheel provides safe teen driving information including current videos at www.beforethewheel.com/links.html.

Parent should sit down with their teen driver before they sit behind the wheel. Plan a strategy for safe driving. Be sure to discuss safe driving behaviors including the "Five Non-Negotiable Restrictions:"

1. Absolute sobriety. Not a drop of alcohol.

2. Cell communication. Your teen driver should only talk or text on their mobile device when at a complete stop and parked in a safe location.

3. Graduated Driver License restrictions must always be followed.

4. Seat belts. All vehicle occupants must wear a seat belt under Wisconsin law.

5. Speed limit. Stay within speed limit at all times.
